This is the time of year in Wisconsin to go get some juicy and delicious strawberries to eat! Actually going to a strawberry farm and picking the berries yourself is a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon. If you live near Madison there are a couple of local farms that do not spray their berries and make them available to the public to pick. I went to JenEhr farm in Sun Prairie today but Carandale is also a good choice in Oregon.
I took Nate and Darius (my little bro from Big Brothers Big Sisters) with me and as you can see they also had fun picking. It really is a great activity for the entire family. We were able to pick about 10 pounds of berries in around an hour.
You can do a lot of wonderful things with fresh strawberries. I chose to freeze half of them for later use. The trick with freezing is to clean them, cut off the stems and then put them on a cookie sheet to freeze for 6 hours. This will prevent them from getting all mushy and sticking together when you re-freeze them in a smaller containers. I also saved some fresh ones for dipping in fresh whipping cream! YUM!
Remember that strawberry season in Wisconsin will only last a couple of weeks so hurry out and get some before they are gone!
