I recently watched the movie Bag It and was amazed at the impact plastic bags have been making on our environment. I never really gave much thought to the fact that grocery bags are petroleum based and never biodegrade. For example, there’s an area in the Pacific Ocean that is home to the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” a floating plastic island the size of Texas. From sea turtles mistaking plastic bags for their daily food to fish ingesting their toxins and eventually ending up on our plates, single-use plastic bags are leaving their mark, and not in a good way.
Since I’m all about changing your plate, I thought I’d highlight a great product I came across that’s just in time for your weekly trip to the farmers’ market. These reusable produce bags are perfect for fresh fruits and veggies and are machine washable. For just a few dollars, you can cut down on using plastic bags, keep toxins out of your body and save a turtle or two all at the same time!
