It all started in September, 2009. I noticed that I had a very rapid heart rate, sore achy muscles, a gritty sensation in my eyes, and trembling hands. After undergoing testing, four months later I was diagnosed with Grave’s disease, an overactive thyroid. The endocrinologist gave me three options for treatment.
1) Receive a radioactive iodine treatment which slowly destroys the overactive thyroid cells. This usually leads to thyroid underactivity which then requires life long thyroid inducing medication. This was the option recommended by my endocrinologist.
2) Take antithyroid medication for 12-18 months that blocks the production of thyroid hormones and controls hyperthyroidism to see if the condition can be put into remission. My doctor told me that there was a 40% chance that this treatment would be successful.
3) Perform surgery for the removal of the thyroid gland.
After doing a lot of research and discussing my health issues with several alternative/non traditional health practitioners, I decided on option #2 along with a variety of alternative/non traditional treatments was the best choice for me. In my research, I discovered that dental issues can affect autoimmune diseases and thyroid functioning. Graves’s disease is an autoimmune disease. I decided to seek the help of a holistic dentist who worked in collaboration with a practitioner who did Field Control Therapy.
I had knocked out my front teeth as a child and over the years I have had extensive dental work done including a 6 tooth bridge on the front of my month. I also had several crowned teeth and amalgam/silver filings. I discovered that the bridge and all of the crowns in my month were primarily made of the metal nickel. I knew that I had a high sensitivity to nickel my whole life because I could never wear earrings with nickel posts. In addition, further testing showed that I had a mercury toxicity in my system linked to anagram/silver fillings. Of primary concern was also the six tooth bridge in the front of my mouth because it had locked my skull bones in place preventing adequate blood flow to my brain. Nickel was the primary component of the bridge. Testing also showed that I had an infected root canal in one of the front teeth that was part of the bridge.
I decided to take the holistic dentist’s recommendations which included and remove all amalgam fillings from my mouth. The dentist also replaced all of the crowns in my mouth with crowns made from biocompatible materials. The 6 tooth bridge was replaced with a 4 tooth partial and 2 crowns all made from biocompatible materials. The tooth with the infected root canal, which was verified by an oral surgeon, was also removed.
It’s been on ongoing process for over a year but I am very grateful that I decided to follow the recommendations of the holistic dentist and invest in my health. I am happy to report that after being on antithyroid medication for a year the Grave’s disease is in remission. I don’t feel the pressure in the back of skull that I once felt. My thinking is clearer and I feel better than I have felt in years. It’s amazing to me that many of my health issues could be traced back to my teeth. I really didn’t have any pain in my mouth. I never realized that my teeth were negatively affecting me in so many ways. From my experience, I would highly recommend that people investigate their dental health, find a holistic dentist and invest in their mouth and their health!
