My friend from Chicago was visiting and he offered to make dinner. Considering that I am usually the one who is cooking, I jumped at the offer. After walking to the COOP to get the ingredients he starting cooking. The first thing he asked was, “where is your chef knife? ” That is when I looked at him and said, “oh, I do not have one but you can use this”, a $5 kitchen knife from Target. Needless to say, he wasn’t impressed with the fact that I claim to cook all the time and I did not even have a good knife. He went on to explain how having just one 8-10″ chef knife would make cooking so much quicker and more enjoyable. Whenever I watch cooking shows I always admire the chef’s knife skills. However, I had never spent the time or money to invest in a good knife.
After that weekend I decided I would look into a good kitchen knife. I stopped into Orange Tree Imports to see what my options were. I was scared to even look at price tags. Fortunately, they have many knives to choose from at various price points. I was on a pretty strict budget so I went with one that was not top of line but had won many awards including one from Cooks Illustrated.
I ended up purchasing a 10″ chef knife from Victorinox, the same company that makes Swiss Army Knives, for under $30.
So far my friend was right. A good knife makes a HUGE difference. Even though it is not the top of the line it is a great starter knife. I am still working on my knife skills but I think you should consider adding a good knife your kitchen. You will thank me later!

Happy cutting and watch those fingers!
