Did you know you can make a super clean version of Green Bean Casserole for your upcoming holiday meals?
Here are the traditional ingredients for this favorite side dish:
1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 dash black pepper
4 cups cooked cut green beans
1 1/3 cups (canned) french fried onions
To make a cleaner version, simply:
—Replace the soup with Pacific brand organic condensed cream of mushroom soup. The consistency is just slightly different but it still works great! It comes in a 12 oz container versus a 10.5 oz can of soup. So, if you like the consistency as is, you can just leave it. Or you can cut down on the milk OR add more beans OR add some fresh sautéed mushrooms. And remember, it will thicken a bit as you bake it (at 350° for about 25 min).
—Use organic milk
—Substitute soy sauce for gluten free Tamari (or coconut aminos if you are soy free)
—Use canned organic beans (french or regular will work)
—Now for the onions you can do one of three things:
- Omit them altogether (not a huge fan myself)
- Simply slice up onions, roll them in a little flour (gluten free or regular) and fry them up in some coconut oil or butter
- Top with shredded white cheese instead
You can usually make traditional recipes much “cleaner” if you’re willing to experiment and/or get a little creative :).
What temperature of oven and length of time to bake?
Usually 350°F for about 25 minutes or until hot and bubbling.
